R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The year 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the
founding of Robert B. Green Memorial Hospital in San Antonio; and
WHEREAS, Named in honor of the Bexar County judge and Texas
state senator who was a beloved champion of the working class, Green
Memorial first opened its doors on February 2, 1917, with the
mission of providing care to all who needed it, regardless of their
ability to pay; the hospital, colloquially known as "the Green,"
proved invaluable during the influenza epidemic of 1918, and it
soon earned recognition for its pioneering specialty care; and
WHEREAS, When the institution began to struggle financially
over the ensuing decades, local voters approved the creation of the
Bexar County Hospital District in 1955, allowing the Green to
continue its vital work; in 1968, the facility took on a new primary
role as an outpatient center, as most of its inpatient services were
transferred to the recently constructed teaching hospital at the
South Texas Medical Center; years later, the hospital district was
renamed the University Health System, which is now a nationally
recognized academic health center and network of more than 20
primary care, urgent care, specialty, and school-based health
  centers; and
WHEREAS, Though the original Green Memorial Hospital
building continues to serve as a proud landmark of the UHS campus,
most all of the system's outpatient services are offered next door
at the Robert B. Green Clinical Pavilion, a six-story facility
  built in 2013; and
WHEREAS, Robert B. Green Memorial Hospital long played a
significant role in providing medical care to underserved residents
in Bexar County, and this occasion presents a welcome opportunity
to recognize its rich historical legacy; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
Legislature hereby commemorate the 100th anniversary of the
founding of Robert B. Green Memorial Hospital and commend all those
associated with the University Health System for their work in
carrying forth the worthwhile mission of that institution.
