R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, The year 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the |
|
founding of Robert B. Green Memorial Hospital in San Antonio; and |
|
WHEREAS, Named in honor of the Bexar County judge and Texas |
|
state senator who was a beloved champion of the working class, Green |
|
Memorial first opened its doors on February 2, 1917, with the |
|
mission of providing care to all who needed it, regardless of their |
|
ability to pay; the hospital, colloquially known as "the Green," |
|
proved invaluable during the influenza epidemic of 1918, and it |
|
soon earned recognition for its pioneering specialty care; and |
|
WHEREAS, When the institution began to struggle financially |
|
over the ensuing decades, local voters approved the creation of the |
|
Bexar County Hospital District in 1955, allowing the Green to |
|
continue its vital work; in 1968, the facility took on a new primary |
|
role as an outpatient center, as most of its inpatient services were |
|
transferred to the recently constructed teaching hospital at the |
|
South Texas Medical Center; years later, the hospital district was |
|
renamed the University Health System, which is now a nationally |
|
recognized academic health center and network of more than 20 |
|
primary care, urgent care, specialty, and school-based health |
|
centers; and |
|
WHEREAS, Though the original Green Memorial Hospital |
|
building continues to serve as a proud landmark of the UHS campus, |
|
most all of the system's outpatient services are offered next door |
|
at the Robert B. Green Clinical Pavilion, a six-story facility |
|
built in 2013; and |
|
WHEREAS, Robert B. Green Memorial Hospital long played a |
|
significant role in providing medical care to underserved residents |
|
in Bexar County, and this occasion presents a welcome opportunity |
|
to recognize its rich historical legacy; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby commemorate the 100th anniversary of the |
|
founding of Robert B. Green Memorial Hospital and commend all those |
|
associated with the University Health System for their work in |
|
carrying forth the worthwhile mission of that institution. |
