R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, A statue of Nestora Granillo Piarote of the Tigua |
|
tribe was unveiled during a ceremony at the Tigua Indian Cultural |
|
Center in El Paso on July 16, 2017; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born in 1849 and raised in the Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo, |
|
Nestora Granillo Piarote was a celebrated potter and a native |
|
speaker of the Tiwa language; by the time of her passing in 1918, |
|
she had become a highly respected figure in the Tigua community, and |
|
today, hundreds of members of the tribe are counted among her |
|
descendants; and |
|
WHEREAS, Created by local sculptor Julio Sanchez de Alba, the |
|
bronze of this venerated matriarch is 12 feet tall and weighs one |
|
and a half tons, and it is mounted atop a seven-foot base; in |
|
addition to honoring the memory of its subject, the artwork also |
|
pays tribute to all tribal women; and |
|
WHEREAS, The statue is the latest addition to the Ysleta Del |
|
Sur Pueblo's Tigua Indian Cultural Center, which provides an |
|
introduction to the tribe's five centuries of history in the El Paso |
|
region through exhibits and artifacts; it regularly hosts Native |
|
American dances and bread-baking demonstrations, and its gift shop |
|
features a variety of authentic Tigua pottery, jewelry, and |
|
clothing; and |
|
WHEREAS, This striking new sculpture is an impressive |
|
contribution to the cultural legacy of Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo, and |
|
all those associated with its creation and installation may take |
|
pride in a job well done; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
|
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commemorate the dedication |
|
of the statue of Nestora Granillo Piarote at the Tigua Indian |
|
Cultural Center and extend to the center's staff sincere best |
|
wishes for continued success in their important work; and, be it |
|
further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for the Tigua Indian Cultural Center as an expression of |
|
high regard by the Texas House of Representatives. |
