R E S O L U T I O N
 
         WHEREAS, Vaquero: Genesis of the Texas Cowboy will be on
  display at the State Capitol in Austin from May 6 to 9, 2013, and
  this exhibition of photographs by William D. Wittliff represents a
  fitting opportunity to pay tribute to the career of a celebrated
  Texas screenwriter, collector, and photographer; and
         WHEREAS, Born in Taft in 1940, Bill Wittliff spent his
  teenage years in Blanco before moving to Austin, where he studied
  journalism at The University of Texas; he worked for a time in
  publishing, and in 1964, he and his wife, Sally Wittliff,
  established Encino Press, which published volumes by Texas writers
  John Graves, Walter Prescott Webb, Larry L. King, Bud Shrake, Joe R.
  Lansdale, Stephen Harrigan, and others; and
         WHEREAS, Since the late 1970s, Mr. Wittliff has been one of
  the most successful screenwriters in the Lone Star State; he wrote
  the acclaimed film Raggedy Man, set in small-town Texas, and the
  screenplay for the iconic miniseries Lonesome Dove, as well as
  three movies starring Willie Nelson, Honeysuckle Rose, Barbarosa,
  and Red Headed Stranger; other important films he has scripted or
  coscripted include The Black Stallion, Country, Legends of the
  Fall, and The Perfect Storm; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Wittliff is also a leading collector of Texas
  and Southwestern history and culture, and in 1986, he and his wife
  created the Wittliff Collections at Texas State University; the
  Southwestern Writers Collection was founded with Mr. Wittliff's
  gift of the archives of J. Frank Dobie, and the Southwestern and
  Mexican Photography Collection features work by many noted
  photographers; and
         WHEREAS, In the early 1970s, Mr. Wittliff was offered the
  opportunity to photograph one of the last traditional cattle
  roundups in Northern Mexico; over a period of three years, he took
  nearly 5,000 photographs of this now-vanished way of life, and 62 of
  the most striking images make up the Vaquero exhibition, which is
  touring the state throughout 2013 under the auspices of Humanities
  Texas; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Wittliff's many awards include a Writers Guild
  of America Award and a Bronze Wrangler Award from the National
  Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum for Lonesome Dove, as well as
  another Bronze Wrangler Award for Legends of the Fall; he received
  the Distinguished Screenwriter Award from the Austin Film Festival
  in 1996 and the Texas Medal of Arts Award in 2007, and he was one of
  the first inductees into the Texas Film Hall of Fame; and
         WHEREAS, Bill Wittliff's profound love of Texas is matched
  only by his deep and subtle understanding of its heritage, and
  throughout his half-century career as a writer, photographer, and
  collector, he has presented the Lone Star State to his fellow Texans
  and to the world in all its richness and complexity; now, therefore,
  be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
  Legislature hereby commend William D. Wittliff for his immeasurable
  contributions to the cultural vitality of Texas and extend to him
  sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it
  further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Mr. Wittliff as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
