SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 883
 
 
  In Memory
  of
  Emilio Emeterio Gomez
 
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
  citizens of San Benito in mourning the loss of Emilio Emeterio
  "Red" Gomez, who died April 16, 2011, at the age of 67; and
 
         WHEREAS, Mr. Gomez was born August 3, 1943, in Brownsville,
  and graduated from Brownsville High School in 1963; he became a
  butcher at the age of 18, and in 1969 joined the Amalgamated
  Meatcutters Local 408, which later became the United Food and
  Commercial Workers International Union; and
 
         WHEREAS, He worked for the Kroger Company as head
  meatcutter at the highest-volume Kroger meat market in the
  country; he went on to hold many important positions in the
  union, including local union trustee, organizer, local
  president, and executive board member; and
 
         WHEREAS, One of his crowning achievements was to serve as a
  founding member of the United Hispanics of the United Food and
  Commercial Workers International Union; he held several offices
  in the organization before becoming its national president in
  2001; and
 
         WHEREAS, Dedicated to the union movement and to working men
  and women, Mr. Gomez was active in politics, supporting
  candidates sympathetic to the struggles faced by workers; he
  worked diligently to represent all union members equally; and
 
         WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and compassion, he
  gave unselfishly to others, and his wisdom, warmth, and valued
  counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew him; and
 
         WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and
  grandfather, and his family and friends will continue to live
  with the cherished memories of his life and his many
  achievements; now, therefore, be it
 
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
  Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
  family of Emilio Emeterio Gomez: his wife, Maria del Refugio De
  Los Santos Gomez; his daughters, Melissa Gomez, Nora Hunter, and
  Bettina Gomez; his brothers, Eliberto and Alvaro Gomez; his
  sisters, Olivia McDonald, Alma Villarreal, and Argentina Garcia;
  and his grandchildren, Harrison Reagan Hunter and Lenard Ebin
  Bazan; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
  Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
  memory of Emilio Emeterio Gomez.
