SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 882
 
 
  In Memory
  of
  Benigno Layton
 
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
  commemorates the life of longtime music educator and Elsa
  Municipal Court Judge Benigno Layton, who died March 26, 2011, at
  the age of 60; and
         WHEREAS, Benigno "Benny" Layton was born in Port Lavaca,
  Texas, to Pablo Layton and Santos Villarreal Layton; Benny began
  showing signs of exceptional musical talent at a very young age,
  and by the time he was six years old, he had learned to play the
  accordion and with his brothers was performing at birthday
  parties, baptisms, and other public events; and
         WHEREAS, He graduated from Edcouch-Elsa High School in 1969
  and enrolled at Pan American College; he enlisted in the military in
  late 1970; he began his career with the Edcouch-Elsa Independent
  School District in 1981 as an elementary school music teacher; and
         WHEREAS, From 1983 until he retired in August of 2009, he was
  the esteemed director of the Estudiantina Program; over the years,
  his distinguished string ensemble would be asked to perform at
  special events such as Borderfest; he truly had a positive influence
  on the lives of many students and musicians and created the only
  curriculum-approved conjunto program in the state; in 2008, he was
  inducted into the Texas Conjunto Hall of Fame; and
         WHEREAS, Benny Layton began serving as the announcer for
  the Edcouch-Elsa Yellow Jackets football games in 1987; an
  admired and respected leader in the community, he was elected
  president of the district's school board; and
         WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and
  grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be cherished
  forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
  Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
  family of Benigno Layton: his wife, Irma Vera Layton; his
  daughter, Janice Layton Rodriguez; his sons, Benigno Layton,
  Jr., Paul Anthony Layton, Sr., and Armando Rene Layton; his
  mother, Santos V. Layton; his two brothers and his sister; and
  his seven grandchildren; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
  Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
  memory of Benigno Layton.
