Pursuant to a notice posted in accordance with Senate Rule 11.18, a public hearing of the Senate Committee on Education was held on Tuesday, October 14, 2008, in the Capitol Extension, Room E1.036, at Austin, Texas.

The chair called the meeting to order at 1:48 p.m.  The following business was transacted: 

 

Senator Shapiro made opening remarks to the committee.

 

Senator Shapiro called the following invited witnesses to provide testimony on the following charge:  Review and make recommendations to improve the state's Adult Basic Education program. Emphasis should be placed on ways to advance literacy in Texas in order to promote economic and individual development. The review should also include a study of the coordination of adult education services among state agencies and the availability and accessibility of state and federal funding.  See attached list.

 

The chair called persons who registered as public witnesses to provide testimony on the interim committee charge.  See attached list.

 

Senator Shapiro moved that the public testimony be closed; without objection, it was so ordered.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

There being no further business, at 3:01 p.m. Senator Shapiro moved that the Committee stand recessed subject to the call of the chair.  Without objection, it was so ordered.
