Honorable Jerry Madden, Chair, House Committee on Corrections
John S. O'Brien, Director, Legislative Budget Board
HB429 by Madden (Relating to a study of the expenses of health care for certain elderly inmates.), As Introduced
The bill would amend the Government Code by requiring the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) to conduct an inmate healthcare study to determine the amount of savings that would result to the state in healthcare services costs, if the TDCJ were to release the inmates to community parole supervision. The study would include determining the number of inmates 55 years of age or older who receive health care services from TDCJ and have never been convicted of or received a grant of deferred adjudication for an offense described by Section 3g, Article 42.12, Code of Criminal Procedure.
The Texas Department of Criminal Justice has determined that the costs associated with implementing the bill are not anticipated to be significant and could be absorbed with current resources.
