House Committee on Higher Education

         Pursuant to a notice posted on February 10, 1999, the House
         Committee on Higher Education met in a public hearing and was
         called to order by the Chair, Representative Irma Rangel at
         4:05 pm.
         
         The roll was answered as follows:
         
         Present:  Representatives Rangel; Cuellar; Brown, Fred;
                   Farabee; Goolsby; Morrison; Reyna, Elvira (7).
         
         Absent:   Representatives Jones, Jesse; Wohlgemuth (2).
         
         A quorum was present.

         The Chair recognized the members of the committee to introduce
         themselves and give brief comments.
         
         (Representative Wohlgemuth now present.)
         
         Testimony was taken on the status of higher education and on
         critical issues facing higher education in Texas.  (See
         attached witness list.)
         
         At 7:15 pm, on the motion of the Chair and without objection,
         the meeting was adjourned subject to the call of the chair.
