         Pursuant to suspension of Senate Rule 11.11, a public hearing  
         of the Senate Committee of the Whole on Legislative &  
         Congressional Redistricting was held on Saturday, May 17, 1997  
         in the Senate Chamber at Austin, Texas.

         The Chair called the meeting to order at 11:23 a.m.  There  
         being a quorum present, the following business was transacted.   
          
         The following members arrived after the roll was called:   
         none. 
          
         The Chair made brief opening remarks. 
          
         Senator Brown assumed the Chair. 
          
         H.B. 2254 by D. Jones/Barrientos 
          
         The Chair laid out H.B. 2254 and recognized the Senate  
         sponsor, Senator Barrientos, to explain the bill. 
          
         No witnesses appeared to testify in favor of, against, or on  
         the bill. 
          
         Senator Barrientos moved that the Committee report H.B. 2254,  
         without amendment, favorably to the full Senate with the  
         recommendation that it do pass and be printed.  The motion  
         prevailed with a roll call vote of 29 ayes, 0 nays, 0 present  
         not voting, and 3 absent.   
          
         Senator Barrientos moved that the Committee recess, pending  
         the call of the chair, and that the Committee rise and report  
         progress.  The motion prevailed and the Committee recessed at  
         11:30 a.m.
