Pursuant to a notice posted on August 17, 2017, the House Committee on County Affairs met in a public hearing and was called to order by the chair, Representative Coleman, at 10:07 a.m.

 

The initial quorum call was answered as follows: Representatives Coleman; Springer; Biedermann; and Roberts.

 


 

Representative Hinojosa was also present.

 

The committee heard invited testimony on the following topic:

 

Oversight of the implementation of SB 1849 otherwise known as the “Sandra Bland Act”.   Through this, the committee discussed topics such as improvements to the criminal justice system such as diversion practices, increasing training provided to jail staff, and additional suggestions on ways to better the criminal justice system

A guest speaker gave a presentation over the opioid crisis and its effects on Texas.
