Marjory Kent Vickery |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the |
|
citizens of Lewisville in mourning the loss of Marjory Kent |
|
Vickery, who died on May 4, 2017, at the age of 90; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Marjory Vickery was born on July 13, 1926; she |
|
shaped a life of purpose as a champion of education, and she |
|
enriched the lives of others by her warmth, her humor, and her |
|
enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Marjory graduated from Southern Methodist |
|
University and became a world traveler and a trailblazing citizen |
|
of the Lewisville community; she was the first woman to be |
|
elected to serve on the board of the Lewisville Independent |
|
School District; she was later the first Republican woman to be |
|
elected to the Texas State Board of Education, and with that |
|
victory, she also became the first Republican in Denton County to |
|
be elected to state office; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Mrs. Vickery is noted for playing a key role in |
|
developing vital student safety measures, such as implementing |
|
speed limits in school zones and assigning crossing guards at |
|
designated sidewalks; she also worked with the Lewisville |
|
Independent School District Education Foundation to increase |
|
funding for students and teachers; in 2003, Vickery Elementary |
|
School opened its doors in honor of her many years of exceptional |
|
work on behalf of the school district; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Mrs. Vickery shared 63 years of marriage with the |
|
late Paul Byron Vickery, and their loving relationship and |
|
happiness served as an example for their five children, their six |
|
grandchildren, and their six great-grandchildren; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Marjory Vickery was a treasured Texan who was |
|
respected and admired for her tireless work on behalf of young |
|
citizens; she was recognized on numerous occasions for her many |
|
contributions to her community, and she leaves behind memories |
|
that will long be cherished by all who were privileged to share in |
|
her life; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|
Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
|
family of Marjory Kent Vickery; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her |
|
family as an expression of deepest sympathy fromtheTexasSenate |
|
and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of |
|
Marjory Vickery. |
