SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 629
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |
join the citizens of Marble Falls in celebrating the 100th |
anniversary of the election of Ophelia "Birdie" Crosby Harwood as |
the first woman mayor in Texas; and |
WHEREAS, On April 2, 1917, several years before the passage |
of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which |
guaranteed women the right to vote, the people of Marble Falls |
elected Birdie Harwood as their mayor; and |
WHEREAS, Born in 1872 in Blanco County, Birdie married Dr. |
George Harwood, and they and their three sons settled in Marble |
Falls around 1900; Mrs. Harwood sought public office on the |
principle that once a woman had raised her children, it was her |
duty to do what she could to improve the community in which she |
lived; she ran on a platform of making the town clean and inviting |
and one of the beautiful spots in the state; and |
WHEREAS, Today, women hold positions of political |
influence throughout the state and nation, but it is truly |
fitting that those pioneers who paved the way for them receive |
special recognition; now, therefore, be it |
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life and legacy of Ophelia |
"Birdie" Crosby Harwood on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of |
her election as the first woman mayor in Texas; and, be it further |
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
