SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 629
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
join the citizens of Marble Falls in celebrating the 100th
anniversary of the election of Ophelia "Birdie" Crosby Harwood as
the first woman mayor in Texas; and

WHEREAS, On April 2, 1917, several years before the passage
of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which
guaranteed women the right to vote, the people of Marble Falls
elected Birdie Harwood as their mayor; and

WHEREAS, Born in 1872 in Blanco County, Birdie married Dr.
George Harwood, and they and their three sons settled in Marble
Falls around 1900; Mrs. Harwood sought public office on the
principle that once a woman had raised her children, it was her
duty to do what she could to improve the community in which she
lived; she ran on a platform of making the town clean and inviting
and one of the beautiful spots in the state; and

WHEREAS, Today, women hold positions of political
influence throughout the state and nation, but it is truly
fitting that those pioneers who paved the way for them receive
special recognition; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life and legacy of Ophelia
"Birdie" Crosby Harwood on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of
her election as the first woman mayor in Texas; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
  honor of this historic occasion.
