SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 616
 
 
  In Memory
  of
  Hazel Ruth Preston Bassett
 
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
  commemorates the life of Hazel Ruth Preston Bassett, who died
  March 27, 2017, at the age of 102; and
         WHEREAS, Hazel Bassett was born on July 31, 1914, to
  William and Georgia Preston, in the Comyn community; she lived
  most of her life in DeLeon, where she was widely respected and
  admired for her talents and achievements; and
         WHEREAS, She married the late Walton T. Bassett on
  December 21, 1934; they raised two daughters together, Shirley and
  Jolene, and she was blessed with many grandchildren and
  great-grandchildren; and
         WHEREAS, Mrs. Bassett worked as a clerk and an operator for
  the DeLeon Telephone Company for nearly four decades and was
  active in a number of community organizations, including the
  Women's Division of the DeLeon Chamber of Commerce; she was a
  Worthy Matron in the local chapter of the Order of the Eastern
  Star; and
         WHEREAS, A devout Christian who practiced her faith in her
  daily life, she was a member for more than 80 years of First
  Baptist Church; she was a skilled seamstress and a talented cook,
  and she took great pleasure in traveling with her family and
  playing bridge with her friends; and
         WHEREAS, A woman of courage, strength, and compassion, she
  gave generously to others, and her warmth and her enthusiasm for
  living each day to the fullest will not be forgotten by those who
  were privileged to share in her life; and
         WHEREAS, She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother,
  and she leaves behind memories that will be cherished forever by
  her family and many friends; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
  Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
  family of Hazel Ruth Preston Bassett; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
  Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
  memory of Hazel Ruth Preston Bassett.
