SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 573
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  recognize Edmundo Nieto for his selfless military service during
  and after World War II; and
         WHEREAS, Edmundo Nieto was born on March 29, 1919, in
  Presidio; he earned a business degree from Saint Edward's
  University, and he returned to his hometown soon after the bombing
  of Pearl Harbor to prepare himself for serving his country; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Nieto served with distinction in the 933rd
  Field Artillery Battalion of the United States Army; he was first
  sent to Africa, where his battalion was in charge of transporting
  ammunition to stationed units, and he later served in the
  European Theater in areas of France, Germany, and Italy; and
         WHEREAS, Although he was hit with shrapnel while walking
  near a bridge that the Germans were attempting to bomb, Mr. Nieto
  never directly participated in combat missions; he worked with
  his battalion to ensure that fellow soldiers had the tools and
  supplies they needed to succeed on the battlefield; after the
  war, he spent three months with occupation forces in Europe, and
  he was honored with cords from the French armed forces and with
  five service medals; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Nieto witnessed the hardships of war and the
  absolute horror of concentration camps, yet he is grateful for the
  experiences he had and for having met an array of people from
  different cultures who helped broaden his understanding of the
  world; and
         WHEREAS, Edmundo Nieto is a beloved patriot and a treasured
  citizen of the Lone Star State; he demonstrated the highest ideals
  of service in defense of the nation, and the country will forever
  owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
  Legislature, hereby commend Edmundo Nieto for his service on
  behalf of his fellow citizens and for his heroism and valor
  during World War II; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
