A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
|
relating to the eligibility of certain persons younger than 18 |
|
|
years of age to preregister to vote. |
|
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
|
SECTION 1. Section 13.001(b), Election Code, is amended to |
|
|
read as follows: |
|
|
(b) To be eligible to apply for registration, a person must, |
|
|
on the date the registration application is submitted to the |
|
|
registrar, be at least 15 [17] years [and 10 months] of age and |
|
|
satisfy the requirements of Subsection (a) except for age. |
|
|
SECTION 2. Section 521.222, Transportation Code, is amended |
|
|
by adding Subsection (i) to read as follows: |
|
|
(i) At the time the department issues a learner license to a |
|
|
person described by Subsection (a), the department shall inform the |
|
|
person that the person may be eligible to apply for registration to |
|
|
vote under Section 13.001, Election Code. |
|
|
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
