R E S O L U T I O N
 
         WHEREAS, Throughout a superlative career that has spanned
  more than six decades, A. J. Foyt has proven himself to be one of the
  all-time greats in auto racing history; and
         WHEREAS, A native of Houston, Anthony Joseph Foyt Jr. began
  racing professionally in the mid-1950s and quickly amassed a fan
  base around the Lone Star State, garnering the nickname "Super
  Tex"; he joined the United States Auto Club racing circuit in 1957,
  and the following year, he made his debut in the Indianapolis 500;
  he went on to win his first Indy 500 in 1961, and he would repeat
  that feat three more times over the next decade and a half, becoming
  the first driver to capture four trophies in the history of the
  race; and
         WHEREAS, During his years behind the wheel, Mr. Foyt excelled
  in a range of other racing series and events as well, including
  NASCAR, Le Mans, midgets, sprints, and International Motor Sports
  Association sports cars; he won 14 national titles and 172 major
  races across North America, Europe, and Australia; moreover, his 10
  triumphs in one season, 7 national championships, and 67 career
  victories in the IndyCar Series all still stand as records, and he
  is the only driver to ever win the Indy 500, the Daytona 500, and the
  24 Hours of Le Mans, three of the most prestigious events in
  motorsports; and
         WHEREAS, Though he retired from driving in 1993, Mr. Foyt has
  enjoyed a long and successful second career as a team owner; his
  racers have won two national IndyCar titles and the 1999
  Indianapolis 500, and today he owns the No. 14 and No. 4 ABC Supply
  Chevrolets in the Verizon IndyCar Series; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Foyt has received well-deserved recognition for
  his numerous accomplishments; he has been named one of NASCAR's 50
  Greatest Drivers and voted Driver of the Century by a panel of
  experts and the Associated Press, and he has also been inducted into
  the International Motorsports Hall of Fame, the Motorsports Hall of
  Fame of America, the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame, and the North
  Carolina Auto Racing Hall of Fame; and
         WHEREAS, Among the most prominent and enduring figures in
  racing, A. J. Foyt has inspired generations of fans across the Lone
  Star State and beyond, and it is indeed a pleasure to recognize this
  legendary Texan for his professional achievements; now, therefore,
  be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
  Legislature hereby honor A. J. Foyt on his exceptional career in
  motorsports and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued
  success; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Mr. Foyt as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
