R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Joseph B. McShane Jr., a respected engineer and
  entrepreneur, is being inducted into the Petroleum Hall of Fame on
  May 9, 2017; and
         WHEREAS, Based at the Permian Basin Petroleum Museum in
  Midland, the Petroleum Hall of Fame recognizes individuals who have
  made outstanding contributions to the development of the petroleum
  industry in the region; and
         WHEREAS, Born in San Antonio in 1929, Joe McShane attended
  Trinity University and The University of Texas, where he earned his
  bachelor's degree in petroleum engineering in 1952; he embarked on
  his long and impressive career by working for such major West Texas
  companies as Forest Oil and Signal Oil and Gas; and
         WHEREAS, In 1959, Mr. McShane joined with B. Oliver Wood to
  form their own company; four years later, they were joined by
  geologist W. H. Thams to form Wood, McShane and Thams and went on to
  acquire and develop their own drilling properties; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. McShane helped pioneer the drilling of coal bed
  methane wells in the coal formations of the Raton Basin, and in the
  early 1990s, he promoted the use of 3-D seismic technology to drill
  deep exploration wells in Martin, Midland, and Andrews Counties;
  and
         WHEREAS, A leader in his profession, Mr. McShane has been
  active with the Permian Basin Petroleum Association and was named
  the recipient of the association's Top Hand award in 1990; in
  addition, he has been a prominent member of the National Stripper
  Well Association, the Independent Petroleum Association of
  America, and the Texas Independent Producers and Royalty Owners
  Association; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. McShane has given back to his community as a
  member of the Ward County Airport Advisory Committee and the board
  of managers for the Ward Memorial Hospital; his civic engagement
  was recognized in 1980 with the Outstanding Citizen Award from the
  Monahans Chamber of Commerce; in all his endeavors, he has
  benefited from the love and support of his wife, Marie; and
         WHEREAS, Through his hard work and commitment to innovation,
  Joe McShane has distinguished himself as a successful and
  influential figure in an industry that stands at the heart of the
  Texas economy, and it is truly fitting that he should receive this
  prestigious honor; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Joseph B. McShane Jr. on his
  induction into the Petroleum Hall of Fame and extend to him sincere
  best wishes for the future; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Mr. McShane as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
