HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
 
         WHEREAS, The Honorable Elizabeth J. Nelson is concluding her
  notable six-year tenure as mayor of Marlin in June 2017; and
         WHEREAS, Ms. Nelson began her exemplary career in municipal
  government in 2004, when she was first elected to a seat on the
  Marlin City Council; she held that position for the next seven
  years, and during that time she served on three occasions as mayor
  pro tem; in 2011 she won the first of three consecutive terms as
  mayor, becoming the second woman to hold that office in the city's
  145-year history; and
         WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan earned a bachelor's degree in
  biology and earth science from Texas Tech University and a master's
  degree in secondary education from The University of Texas of the
  Permian Basin; she spent a number of years in the public schools and
  then went to work for the Texas Youth Commission, where she served
  as an assistant principal and as coordinator of the Educational
  Assessment Unit; after joining the staff of Texas A&M University in
  2001, she coordinated a special project for the Jeffersonian
  Institute; and
         WHEREAS, A founding member of the Falls County Boys and Girls
  Club, Mayor Nelson played an instrumental role in securing a $1.8
  million grant to fund an after-school program for young people in
  Marlin; she is also a member of the Falls County Historical
  Commission, the Marlin Rotary Club, the executive committee of the
  Heart of Texas Council of Governments, and the board of directors of
  the Economic Opportunities Advancement Corporation; her impressive
  record of community service includes past membership on the boards
  of the Marlin Library, the Palace Theatre, and the American Heart
  Association; in recognition of her extensive contributions in the
  civic realm, Leadership Texas selected her in 2000 as one of 90
  Texas women to be honored for their lifetime achievements; and
         WHEREAS, During Elizabeth Nelson's six years at the helm of
  Marlin's city government, she has demonstrated both able leadership
  and a deep concern for the public interest, and she may indeed
  reflect with pride on all she has accomplished in behalf of her
  fellow citizens; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the 85th Legislature of the State of Texas
  hereby commend Elizabeth J. Nelson on her service as mayor of Marlin
  and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success and
  happiness; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Ms. Nelson as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives and Senate.
