HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Over the course of a career spanning more than a half |
|
century, G. Harvey of Fredericksburg has distinguished himself as a |
|
highly respected artist whose works are prized by museums and |
|
collectors throughout the United States and abroad; and |
|
WHEREAS, Gerald Harvey Jones was born in San Antonio in 1933 |
|
and grew up in the Texas Hill Country; as the grandson of a former |
|
trail boss, he often heard fascinating stories about the cowboy |
|
life; he enjoyed sketching and learned to paint with oils, and after |
|
graduating cum laude from North Texas State University, he honed |
|
his talent while teaching at The University of Texas at Austin; and |
|
WHEREAS, In 1963, Mr. Harvey was able to quit his job and |
|
devote himself fully to his painting; he received his first major |
|
exhibition just two years later and won the prestigious New |
|
Master's Award from the American Artists Professional League; many |
|
of his works feature iconic Western scenes, and they were collected |
|
by such prominent Texans as President Lyndon Johnson and Governor |
|
John Connally; and |
|
WHEREAS, A number of Mr. Harvey's impressionistic paintings, |
|
rich in period detail, portray American and European cities of a |
|
bygone age; over the years, his works have been acquired for |
|
important private, corporate, government, and museum collections, |
|
and they have been shown in a host of exhibitions, including several |
|
at the Gilcrease Museum; in 1991 alone, his art was featured in |
|
three prominent Washington, D.C., exhibitions, at the National |
|
Archives, the Treasury Department, and the Smithsonian |
|
Institution, which hosted "The All-American Horse: Paintings of G. |
|
Harvey" for 10 months; the Smithsonian also commissioned his work |
|
for the cover of its 150th anniversary commemorative book; and |
|
WHEREAS, Among myriad accolades, Mr. Harvey has received a |
|
lifetime achievement award from the Briscoe Western Art Museum in |
|
San Antonio, the Legacy Award from the Booth Western Art Museum in |
|
Cartersville, Georgia, and a Distinguished Alumni Award from North |
|
Texas State; and |
|
WHEREAS, G. Harvey has earned wide acclaim for his artistry, |
|
and his evocative representations of the Old West have helped |
|
innumerable Texans feel a closer connection to the history of the |
|
Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the 85th Legislature of the State of Texas |
|
hereby honor G. Harvey for his outstanding accomplishments as an |
|
artist; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Mr. Harvey as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
House of Representatives and Senate. |
