A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 
AN ACT
  relating to a requirement that each state university provide to a
  student certain employment data relating to the student's major
  field of study.
         BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
         SECTION 1.  Subchapter Z, Chapter 51, Education Code, is
  amended by adding Section 51.9196 to read as follows:
         Sec. 51.9196.  REQUIRED EMPLOYMENT DATA FOR NEW STUDENTS
  REGARDING MAJOR FIELD OF STUDY.  (a)  In this section, "general
  academic teaching institution" and "public state college" have the
  meanings assigned by Section 61.003.
         (b)  As soon as practicable following the student's
  enrollment, each general academic teaching institution other than a
  public state college shall provide to each first-time entering
  undergraduate student, including each undergraduate student who
  transfers to the institution, information, in electronic or paper
  format, relating to the student's major field of study from the
  Texas Consumer Resource for Education and Workforce Statistics
  ("Texas CREWS") report on gainful employment applicable to the
  institution for the most recent year for which that information is
  available.
         (c)  If a student to whom an institution is required to
  provide information under this section has not chosen a major field
  of study, the institution shall provide to the student an Internet
  website link to the Texas CREWS report on gainful employment
  applicable to the institution for the most recent year for which
  that information is available.
         SECTION 2.  Section 51.9196, Education Code, as added by
  this Act, applies beginning with the 2017 fall semester.
         SECTION 3.  This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
  a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
  provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution.  If this
  Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
  Act takes effect September 1, 2017.
