SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 53
 
 
  In Memory
  of
  Thomas Mulford Diamond
 
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
  citizens of El Paso in mourning the loss of Thomas Mulford
  Diamond, who died July 8, 2017, at the age of 94; and
         WHEREAS, Tom Diamond was born on March 28, 1923, in Long
  Beach, California, to Violet and Thomas Diamond; he joined the
  United States Army at the age of 19 and served with distinction in
  the Pacific theater during World War II; he returned to
  California and earned a degree at Stanford University before
  returning to active military service during the Korean War; and
         WHEREAS, After the war, he attended the Baylor University
  School of Law and graduated with honors in 1957; he then moved to
  El Paso, where he worked for a time with the Texas Highway
  Department and as chief of staff for County Judge Woodrow Bean
  before entering the private practice of law; and
         WHEREAS, Over the course of his distinguished legal
  career, he was a tireless advocate for Native American civil
  rights, and he played a major role in helping the Tigua tribe of
  Ysleta del Sur Pueblo receive federal recognition and trust
  status; he also established the Beaverhead Lodge Ranch in the
  Gila Mountains of New Mexico, a working ranch he operated with
  his son, Jack; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Diamond was very active in Democratic Party
  politics for many years and developed relationships with
  President John F. Kennedy and President Lyndon B. Johnson; and
         WHEREAS, In retirement, he drew on his impressive
  story-telling abilities and wrote two novels, Rimfire and Apache
  Tears, along with an autobiography, Moon Spell; and
         WHEREAS, He and his beloved wife of 68 years, Carolyn,
  married on January 1, 1949; they raised their son together and were
  blessed with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and
         WHEREAS, He was noted for his brilliant legal mind and for
  his courage, compassion, and humility; he gave generously to
  others, and his wisdom, his commitment to equal justice for all,
  and his enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest will not be
  forgotten by those who were privileged to share in his life; and
         WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather,
  and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by his
  family and countless friends; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
  Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere
  condolences to the bereaved family of Thomas Mulford Diamond;
  and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
  Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
  memory of Tom Diamond.
