R E S O L U T I O N

|
|
WHEREAS, Family and friends will long cherish their memories |
|
|
of William Sumerford of Amarillo, who passed away on August 1, 2017, |
|
|
at the age of 76; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The son of William and Emma Sumerford, Bill |
|
|
Sumerford was born on April 22, 1941, in Temple, and after |
|
|
graduating from high school in Midland, he earned a bachelor's |
|
|
degree from Texas Tech University; he went on to work as a refinery |
|
|
engineer for Sun Oil Company and later for Oryx Energies, from which |
|
|
he retired in 2000; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, After relocating to Amarillo, Mr. Sumerford became |
|
|
actively involved in local politics; over the years, he served as |
|
|
secretary of the Potter County Republican Party executive |
|
|
committee, and in 2011 he was recognized by the Republican Party of |
|
|
Texas as Volunteer of the Year in Senate District 31; he further |
|
|
gave of his time and talents by repairing old computers, which he |
|
|
donated to nonprofit organizations; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Sumerford was the devoted husband of Kathy |
|
|
Sumerford and the proud father of two sons, Christopher and Jim, and |
|
|
four daughters, Dawn, Sherry, Tricia, and Sheryl; he also |
|
|
experienced the joy of welcoming 11 grandchildren and 10 |
|
|
great-grandchildren into his family; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Although Bill Sumerford will be deeply missed, he |
|
|
leaves behind a record of civic engagement and service to others |
|
|
that will continue to inspire all those who knew and loved him; now, |
|
|
therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
|
|
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory |
|
|
of Bill Sumerford and extend heartfelt sympathy to his family and |
|
|
many friends; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Bill |
|
|
Sumerford. |
