R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The Beta Upsilon Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi
  Fraternity, Inc., is celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2017, and
  this occasion truly merits special recognition; and
         WHEREAS, Kappa Alpha Psi was established in 1911 at Indiana
  University, with other chapters being added across the country in
  the years and decades that followed; and
         WHEREAS, The Beta Upsilon Chapter was founded in 1947 thanks
  to the efforts of C. A. Ladner and David Bradford, who were both
  members of the fraternity's Houston Alumni Chapter; the two men
  dedicated themselves to the task of starting a Kappa Alpha Psi
  chapter at the Houston College for Negroes, which would soon become
  Texas Southern University; when the Beta Upsilon Chapter was
  officially chartered on March 15 of that year, it was the first
  Greek letter organization on the campus; its charter line members
  were Arthur M. Gaines Jr., Orville B. Harris, Cleveland B. Davis
  Jr., Warren D. Davis, George A. Lavalier, Charles E. Grays, Roy A.
  Hutchins, John E. Howard, James D. Bingham, Jeff S. Scott, Charles
  A. Hatcher, Joseph A. Lee, and Madison L. Johnson; and
         WHEREAS, Since its inception, the chapter has initiated more
  than 600 members, many of whom have gone on to distinguish
  themselves by establishing notable careers in such professions as
  public service, law, medicine, athletics, dentistry, education,
  and pharmacy; and
         WHEREAS, Throughout its history, the Beta Upsilon Chapter has
  committed itself to fostering a brotherhood of concerned citizens
  who work in behalf of the greater good, and its members may indeed
  reflect with pride on their organization's admirable tradition of
  civic involvement and achievement; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
  Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commemorate the 70th
  anniversary of the Beta Upsilon Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi
  Fraternity, Inc., and extend to all those associated with the group
  sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the chapter as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
