R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The life of an admired civil rights leader drew to a
  close with the passing of Jaime Martinez of San Antonio on July 16,
  2017, at the age of 70; and
         WHEREAS, A native of San Antonio, Jaime Martinez was raised
  in a barrio on the city's West Side and attended Lanier High School;
  he first began advocating for the rights of area migrant workers as
  a young man and went on to enjoy a career as a union organizer; over
  the years, he helped coordinate marches around the country,
  including the annual Cesar Chavez March for Justice in San Antonio;
  and
         WHEREAS, In 1996, Mr. Martinez founded the Cesar E. Chavez
  Legacy and Educational Foundation with the mission of preserving
  the legacy of its namesake; the organization advocates for social
  and economic justice and promotes civic participation, and each
  year, it awards thousands of dollars in scholarships to deserving
  area students; in addition, in 2011, Mr. Martinez played an
  instrumental role in the renaming of Durango Boulevard in San
  Antonio as Cesar Chavez Boulevard; and
         WHEREAS, Jaime Martinez contributed immeasurably to the
  lives of his fellow citizens, and although he will be deeply missed,
  his devotion to his community will forever remain a source of
  inspiration to all who were privileged to know him; now, therefore,
  be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
  Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory
  of Jaime Martinez and extend heartfelt sympathy to his relatives
  and many friends; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Jaime
  Martinez.
