R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The 96th birthday of an esteemed Texan is truly
  cause for celebration, and retired U.S. Marine Corps Lieutenant
  Colonel Roy Holland Elrod is reaching that impressive milestone on
  June 23, 2015; and
         WHEREAS, Roy Elrod was born in 1919 on a farm north of
  Muleshoe, Texas, an event made even more noteworthy by the fact that
  it was recorded in only the fourth birth certificate ever issued in
  Bailey County; after graduating from Muleshoe High School, he
  attended Texas A&M University before answering his nation's call to
  duty during World War II and enlisting in the marines; and
         WHEREAS, Serving in the South Pacific, Mr. Elrod was stranded
  for four months on Guadalcanal, where he earned a Silver Star for
  leading an assault against the enemy; during the Battle of Tarawa
  Atoll, he led an artillery company through withering fire during a
  beach assault and later was recommended for a Navy Cross for wiping
  out the enemy headquarters; on Saipan, he earned a Purple Heart for
  wounds sustained during an enemy artillery attack; and
         WHEREAS, After the war, Mr. Elrod went on to a distinguished
  and storied career in the marines, retiring at the rank of
  lieutenant colonel; in civilian life, he became a successful
  commercial and residential developer, and he remains active in the
  company; he currently lives in Fredericksburg, Virginia, but he
  still considers himself a proud Texan; and
         WHEREAS, Lieutenant Colonel Elrod fought with great
  distinction during World War II and has enjoyed much well-deserved
  success, and his 96th birthday is a welcome opportunity to
  acknowledge the life and accomplishments of this true son of the
  Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Roy Holland Elrod on his 96th
  birthday and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued
  happiness; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Lieutenant Colonel Elrod as an expression of high
  regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
