R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The city of Port Isabel lost a highly regarded |
|
public servant with the passing of former mayor Quirino Z. Martinez |
|
on March 26, 2015, at the age of 76; and |
|
WHEREAS, The son of Candelario and Mariana Zurita Martinez, |
|
Quirino Martinez was born and raised in Port Isabel; he began his |
|
career in local government in 1970, when he was elected as a city |
|
commissioner; he served for six years in that office and held the |
|
title of mayor pro tempore for four years; elected as the city's |
|
mayor in 1976, he served four consecutive terms as well as a fifth |
|
term from 1996 to 1998; and |
|
WHEREAS, During his noteworthy tenure, Mayor Martinez worked |
|
diligently to improve the quality of life of Port Isabel residents; |
|
he played a key role in a number of essential civic projects, |
|
including the construction of a new library, community center, and |
|
chamber of commerce complex, the establishment of the Port Isabel |
|
Health Clinic and Laguna Madre Park, and the renovation of |
|
Washington, Beulah Lee, and Pompano Parks; he also helped bring |
|
about the expansion of the city's museums and public library; his |
|
many accomplishments were honored in 2011 with the dedication of |
|
the Mayor Quirino Z. Martinez Park Pavilion at Washington Park; and |
|
WHEREAS, In all of his endeavors, Mr. Martinez enjoyed the |
|
love and support of his wife of 60 years, Julia, and he took great |
|
pride in his children, Beatriz, Quirino, Freddy, and Noe; his life |
|
was further enriched by his many grandchildren, |
|
great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; and |
|
WHEREAS, Although Quirino Martinez will be deeply missed, the |
|
memory of this remarkable civic leader will long endure in the |
|
hearts of the many people who benefited from his commitment to serve |
|
the greater good; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of the Honorable Quirino |
|
Z. Martinez and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his |
|
family: to his wife, Julia R. Martinez; to his daughter, Beatriz M. |
|
Martinez, and her husband, Gualberto; to his sons, Quirino Martinez |
|
Jr. and his wife, Veronica, and Alfredo "Freddy" Gomez; to his 15 |
|
grandchildren, his 15 great-grandchildren, and his 3 |
|
great-great-grandchildren; to his sister, Casilda Betancourt, and |
|
her husband, Daniel; to his brothers, Candelario Martinez and his |
|
wife, Maggie, Gregorio Martinez and his wife, Marcelina, Aureliano |
|
Martinez and his wife, Luz, Ramiro Martinez and his wife, Melin, and |
|
Mariano Martinez and his wife, Luisa; to his 25 nieces and nephews; |
|
and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Quirino Z. |
