R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Deputy Sheriff Thomas Shaw of the Nueces County |
|
Sheriff's Office lost his life in the line of duty on September 10, |
|
1877, and his service and sacrifice will not soon be forgotten; and |
|
WHEREAS, In September 1877, Deputy Sheriff Shaw and an |
|
assistant rode to Brooks County to arrest a man who was wanted for |
|
selling stolen hides; Deputy Sheriff Shaw rode in the back of a |
|
wagon with the prisoner, his wife, and their two children on the |
|
return trip, and while the party was stopped in Banquete, someone |
|
stabbed the deputy to death; the prisoner's wife claimed the deputy |
|
was assaulted by a party of armed men, but her husband was later put |
|
on trial for the murder; and |
|
WHEREAS, Our state and nation benefit immeasurably from the |
|
courage and commitment of law enforcement professionals such as |
|
Deputy Sheriff Thomas Shaw, who willingly place themselves in |
|
harm's way each day to safeguard the lives and property of their |
|
fellow citizens; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life and exemplary service of |
|
Deputy Sheriff Thomas Shaw of the Nueces County Sheriff's Office. |
