  In Memory
  of
  Robert L. Marquardt
 
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and pays
  tribute to the life of philanthropist and entrepreneur Robert L.
  Marquardt, who died January 14, 2012, at the age of 86; and
         WHEREAS, Born December 25, 1925, in Dayton, Ohio, Robert
  Marquardt was enterprising, even as a child; the future founder
  of Management and Training Corporation launched several
  neighborhood businesses as a youngster, and that work ethic
  served him well throughout his life; and
         WHEREAS, During World War II, Mr. Marquardt was a
  midshipman for the United States Merchant Marine and the United
  States Navy; he attained a bachelor of arts degree from Denison
  University and, later, a master's degree in business and a
  doctoral degree in business management; in 1960, he joined
  Thiokol Chemical Corporation as marketing director; and
         WHEREAS, At Thiokol, Mr. Marquardt helped create an
  education division and encouraged the company to work with the
  federal Department of Labor in operating Job Corps Centers; in
  1980, he parlayed this experience into his own business, founding
  Management and Training Corporation; today, the firm employs
  some 9,200 people, is the largest operator of Job Corps Centers
  in the country, and is the nation's third-largest operator of
  private correctional institutions; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Marquardt also found time for philanthropy
  and good works; his efforts were instrumental to many community
  projects and initiatives, including the Beus Pond Nature Park,
  the George S. Eccles Dinosaur Park, and the Ogden River Parkway;
  he also enjoyed landscaping, deep-sea fishing, writing, drawing,
  and long-distance running; and
         WHEREAS, Survived by his wife of 23 years, Annette, and two
  children and several grandchildren, Mr. Marquardt leaves behind
  many fond memories that will long be cherished by those who knew
  him; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd
  Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
  family of Robert L. Marquardt; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
  Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
  memory of Robert Marquardt.
