R E S O L U T I O N
 
         WHEREAS, Primetime anchor Estela Casas is celebrating 20
  years at KVIA-TV in El Paso, and this notable anniversary provides a
  fitting opportunity to take note of her achievements in broadcast
  journalism; and
         WHEREAS, A native of El Paso, Ms. Casas graduated from Burges
  High School and studied voice performance at Arizona State
  University; she returned to her hometown to take up a career in
  television, and while working, she earned a bachelor's degree in
  communications from The University of Texas at El Paso; and
         WHEREAS, Ms. Casas has been a journalist for nearly three
  decades, and for the past 20 years, she has been a member of the news
  team at KVIA; during that time, she has covered a wide variety of
  issues and news stories, from the pope's visit to Mexico to the life
  of prison inmates to border politics; she currently serves as the
  primetime coanchor of the ABC-7 evening news; and
         WHEREAS, A longtime advocate for women's health issues, Ms.
  Casas televised her own mammogram in 1993, and when she was
  diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2010, she shared her diagnosis and
  treatment with the public in news stories and her blog, empowering
  others with her courage and forthrightness; and
         WHEREAS, Despite her busy professional life, Ms. Casas has
  also found time to give back to her community through her work with
  the Paso del Norte Health Foundation, the Rio Grande Cancer
  Foundation, the University Breast Care Center, the Las Palmas
  Women's Advisory Board, the YWCA, the American Heart Association,
  and the League of United Latin American Citizens; she has been named
  to the El Paso Women's Hall of Fame, and in 2011, she was recognized
  as one of the Women of Impact by El Paso Inc.; and
         WHEREAS, This outstanding journalist's dedication,
  professionalism, and compassion for others have greatly benefited
  the people of El Paso, and she may indeed take great pride in all
  that she has accomplished as she celebrates this significant
  milestone in her career; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
  Legislature hereby commemorate the 20th anniversary of Estela Casas
  at KVIA in El Paso and extend to her sincere best wishes for
  continued success; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Ms. Casas as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
