R E S O L U T I O N

WHEREAS, January 25, 2014, marks the 175th anniversary of the
adoption of the Lone Star Flag, now the state flag of Texas, and
this is a fitting opportunity to commemorate its creation in
  Montgomery County in 1839; and
WHEREAS, This striking flag, with its bold red, white, and
blue stripes and iconic white star, was the work of Dr. Charles
Bellinger Stewart, a pharmacist and postmaster in Montgomery and
the first secretary of state of Texas; created at the request of
Mirabeau B. Lamar, president of the Republic of Texas,
Dr. Stewart's elegantly simple design was approved by a committee
of six signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence before
being adopted by the Texas Congress and officially accepted, on
January 25, 1839, by President Lamar; it went on to become the
official state flag when Texas joined the Union in 1845; and
WHEREAS, Down through the generations, Montgomery County has
celebrated its part in the creation of the flag; a reproduction of
Dr. Stewart's original office serves as the centerpiece of the

documents and other artifacts telling the story of the flag's
  design and creation; and
WHEREAS, Displayed all across the state, the Lone Star Flag
embodies the spirit, courage, and heritage of the people of Texas,
and the work of Dr. Charles B. Stewart remains a great source of

  later; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
