SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 849
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  recognize Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church on the occasion of its
  official Texas Historical Marker dedication ceremony, which is
  being conducted by the Harris County Historical Commission on May 1,
  2011; and
         WHEREAS, The Texas Historical Commission honors places and
  institutions that are of historical significance to the
  community and state, and Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church has had
  a positive impact on the citizens of Houston and Harris County
  for many years; and
         WHEREAS, Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church has its roots in
  the Saint Stephen's Episcopal Mission, which served the Houston
  Heights community from 1896 to 1903; many of the communicants of
  the mission became charter members of Saint Andrew's Episcopal
  Church, which was named for the mission's rector, Benjamin Andrew
  Rogers; and
         WHEREAS, Church organizers met in a home, and later a
  hardware store, before erecting a building on Allston Street; in
  1921, construction began on a new building at 19th and Yale
  Streets, and a final move occurred in 1948, when a new church
  building was completed on Heights Boulevard; and
         WHEREAS, The church experienced congregational growth and
  expanded its outreach programs under the outstanding leadership
  of the Reverend Haskin V. Little, who served as rector from 1952
  to 1977; the church participated in the diocesan Cuban refugee
  resettlement program and offered its assistance to such causes as
  Heights Towers and Heights House, which provided housing for
  low-income elderly persons; and
         WHEREAS, Over the years, the church has supported local and
  international missions and has consistently reached out to those
  in need in the Heights community; today, the church continues to
  provide enlightenment, hope, and support to the Heights
  neighborhood and to the community at large; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
  Legislature, hereby extend to all who are a part of the Saint
  Andrew's Episcopal Church community congratulations and best
  wishes for a memorable dedication ceremony for the church's
  official Texas Historical Marker; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
  honor of this ceremony and Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church.
