SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 626
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |
|
|
recognize Texas Ranger Chief Antonio Leal on the occasion of his |
|
|
retirement from the Texas Department of Public Safety on March |
|
|
31, 2011, after 27 years of loyal service; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Antonio "Tony" Leal joined the Texas Department |
|
|
of Public Safety in 1984; as a highway patrol trooper stationed |
|
|
in Fort Bend County, he led his area in criminal apprehensions; |
|
|
he was honored with the Houston Area 100 Club Officer of the Year |
|
|
award and received many letters and other commendations for his |
|
|
exemplary service; he became a sergeant in 1991 and served in San |
|
|
Antonio; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, He was promoted to Texas Ranger in 1994 with |
|
|
Company A in Houston and later served with Company D in San |
|
|
Antonio; he was named to the newly formed Unsolved Crimes |
|
|
Investigation Unit in 2000 and successfully solved the unit's |
|
|
first cold murder case; he was promoted to lieutenant and then to |
|
|
commander of the Rangers' Cold Case Squad; he was promoted to |
|
|
company commander in Houston in 2005; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Chief Leal was promoted to the highest rank of the |
|
|
Texas Rangers in 2008; he was the first Hispanic officer to |
|
|
become chief of the Texas Rangers and the youngest person to hold |
|
|
the job at the time; during his watch, he oversaw the state's most |
|
|
complex and major investigations, border security operations, |
|
|
public corruption cases, and special tactical resources; he |
|
|
created the department's first full-time Special Weapons and |
|
|
Tactics team; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Throughout his tenure with the Texas Department |
|
|
of Public Safety, Chief Leal exhibited outstanding leadership |
|
|
and professionalism; his steadfast efforts on behalf of the |
|
|
public and the state have earned him the lasting respect and |
|
|
admiration of all who have had the privilege of knowing him and |
|
|
working with him; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd |
|
|
Legislature, hereby commend Texas Ranger Chief Antonio Leal for |
|
|
his many years of dedicated service to the citizens of Texas and |
|
|
extend to him best wishes in all his future endeavors; and, be it |
|
|
further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
|
him as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate. |
