R E S O L U T I O N
 
         WHEREAS, The 80th birthday of an esteemed Texan is indeed a
  special occasion, and Erasmo Andrade of El Paso celebrated this
  memorable milestone on May 12, 2011; and
         WHEREAS, Born in Bruni on May 12, 1931, Mr. Andrade is the son
  of Wilivaldo Andrade and Maria Nieto Andrade; he graduated from San
  Antonio Tech and served for two years in the United States Navy;
  while completing his degree in international relations and studying
  for his master's degree in education, he served as a substitute
  teacher in the Edgewood school district, and he joined the San
  Antonio Independent School District in 1958; he served as executive
  director of the Zavala County Mental Health Program from 1971-1973
  and then earned his law degree at Texas Southern University
  Thurgood Marshall School of Law in 1977; within a year, he became
  facilitator of the Stimulating the Neighborhood Action Process
  program for the Austin Independent School District's Department of
  Community Education; and
         WHEREAS, Early in the civil rights era, Mr. Andrade joined
  the League of United Latin American Citizens and the San Antonio
  Federation of Teachers, and he continued to dedicate himself to
  social progress through his participation in a number of
  organizations, among them the Bishops' Committee for the Spanish
  Speaking, the Political Association of Spanish-Speaking
  Organizations, and the Federation for the Advancement of the
  Mexican American; as chair of the Valley Workers Assistance
  Committee, he supported Rio Grande Valley farm workers in their
  strike for better conditions, directing several food caravans to
  assist them; he was engaged in the political arena as well and
  worked with teachers' groups and the community to resolve problems
  associated with integration; since 1994, he and his wife, Sally,
  have resided in El Paso; and
         WHEREAS, Erasmo Andrade has made a lasting, positive
  difference in this state through his dedication to civil rights,
  social justice, and educational advancement, and his birthday
  provides a welcome opportunity to honor him for his many
  accomplishments; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Erasmo Andrade on his 80th birthday
  and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and,
  be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Mr. Andrade as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
