Janis Guerrero-Thompson |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the |
|
citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Janis |
|
Guerrero-Thompson, who died June 7, 2011, at the age of 58; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Janis Guerrero-Thompson was a native Austinite |
|
who graduated from Crockett High School and earned bachelor's, |
|
master's, and doctoral degrees from The University of Texas at |
|
Austin; she enjoyed a long and distinguished career as an |
|
educator, administrator, and community volunteer, and her energy |
|
and passion had a profound impact on many lives; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, She served the Austin Independent School District |
|
in several capacities through the years, most recently as |
|
director for planning and community relations, where she oversaw |
|
communications, planning, fund-raising, and community |
|
partnerships; her innovative ideas on how to communicate with |
|
diverse communities and develop the district's plans for the |
|
future exemplified her leadership on important issues and her |
|
commitment to furthering the best interests of the district's |
|
schoolchildren; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Among the many community organizations that |
|
benefited from her talent and expertise were Central Texas |
|
Goodwill Industries and the Girls Empowerment Network of Austin; |
|
she served on the City of Austin's Civil Service Commission and |
|
was an active volunteer with Chaplain Services at University |
|
Medical Center Brackenridge; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, She was honored in 2004 by Hispanic magazine as a |
|
Top Latina in Community Service, and in 2008 was named one of the |
|
25 Most Influential Hispanics in Austin by La Voz de Austin, |
|
Austin Community College, and the Texas Association of Chicanos |
|
in Higher Education; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, A woman of courage, strength, and generosity, she |
|
gave unselfishly to others, and her wisdom, her commitment to |
|
education, and her sensitivity toward others will not be |
|
forgotten by those who were privileged to share in her life; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, |
|
and she leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by |
|
her family and many friends; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd |
|
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere |
|
condolences to the bereaved family of Janis Guerrero-Thompson: |
|
her husband, Chuck Thompson; her son and daughter-in-law, |
|
Matthew and Jessica Thompson; and her three grandchildren; and, |
|
be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
|
Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
|
memory of Janis Guerrero-Thompson. |
