Pursuant to a notice posted in accordance with Senate Rule 11.18, a public hearing of the Senate Committee on Education was held on Wednesday, June 16, 2010, in the Capitol Extension, Room E1.028, at Austin, Texas.

The chair called the meeting to order at 10:02 a.m.  The following business was transacted: 

 

Senator Shapiro made opening remarks to the Committee.

 

The chair called the following invited witnesses to provide testimony on Interim Charge 6:  Study the effectiveness of Texas school districts' special education programs. Review the range of needs of special education students, districts' ability to provide an appropriate education for these students, and assess the effectiveness of programs currently funded for special education. Make recommendations for improvement.  See attached list.

 

At 11:01 a.m. the roll was called and a quorum was established.  Senator Patrick moved adoption of the minutes from the previous hearings held on March 22, 2010, April 20, 2010, April 21, 2010, and May 24, 2010; without objection, it was so ordered. 

 

At 11:12 a.m. Senator Patrick assumed the chair. 

 

At 11:14 a.m. Senator Shapiro resumed the chair.   

 

At 1:10 p.m. Senator Van de Putte assumed the chair.

 

 

 

 

At 1:32 p.m. Senator Shapiro resumed the chair. 

 

The chair called persons who registered as public witnesses to provide testimony on the interim committee charge.  See attached list.

 

The chair moved that the public testimony be closed; without objection, it was so ordered.

 

There being no further business, at 5:07 p.m. Senator Shapiro moved that the Senate Committee on Education stand recessed subject to the call of the chair.  Without objection, it was so ordered.
