Pursuant to a notice posted in accordance with Senate Rule 11.18, a public hearing of the Senate Committee on Education was held on Wednesday, April 21, 2010, in the Capitol Extension, Room E1.028, at Austin, Texas.

The chair called the meeting to order at 9:10 a.m.  The following business was transacted: 

 

 

Senator Shapiro made opening remarks to the Committee.

 

 

The chair called the following invited witnesses to provide testimony on Interim Charge 2:  Review the state's education policy and initiatives regarding middle grades. Make recommendations to ensure a comprehensive state strategy for preparing students at the middle grades for high school retention and success. This review should include an examination of school-based strategies and best practices that encourage at-risk youth to finish school and that deter delinquency, drug abuse and violence. See attached list.

 

 

The chair called persons who registered as public witnesses to provide testimony on the interim committee charge.  See attached list.

 

 

At 12:25 p.m. Senator Patrick assumed the chair. 

 

 

 

 

 

There being no further business, at 12:57 p.m. Senator Patrick moved that the Committee stand recessed subject to the call of the chair.  Without objection, it was so ordered.
