R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The Lone Star State lost a passionate advocate in
  behalf of all Texans with the death of Betty Price Anderson on
  December 28, 2008, at the age of 78; and
         WHEREAS, Born to the Reverend Henry Price and Irene Price on
  August 18, 1930, the former Betty Price grew up in Central Texas and
  earned a bachelor's degree from North Texas State University in
  1954; she married John Anderson two years later, and the couple made
  their home in Lubbock, where Dr. Anderson served as a professor of
  chemistry at Texas Tech University; and
         WHEREAS, Ms. Anderson soon distinguished herself through her
  outstanding volunteerism in behalf of numerous causes; her
  contributions to the city of Lubbock alone are extraordinary, with
  the Urban Renewal Board, the South Plains Regional Workforce
  Development Board, the Lubbock Area United Way Board, the South
  Plains Area Agency on Aging Advisory Council, and the Saint Mary of
  the Plains Hospital Foundation Board all benefiting from her
  membership; moreover, she was a founding member of the South Plains
  Food Bank, and she shared her time and talents with PEOPLE FIRST,
  the Lubbock Rape Crisis Center, the South Plains AIDS Resource
  Center, the Lubbock Independent School District Committee on
  Excellence, and the city's planning and zoning commission; and
         WHEREAS, An esteemed leader on the state and national level
  as well, Ms. Anderson was appointed to the Texas Commission on
  Children and Youth, the Adult and Protective Services Advisory
  Committee, and the Texas Department of Human Services Aged and
  Disabled Committee, which she chaired; in addition, she was deeply
  involved in the local, state, and national organizations of the
  League of Women Voters and the American Association of University
  Women, both of which she served as state president, and she chaired
  the Texas Committee for the Humanities and the Texas Commission on
  Women; she also gave generously as a board member of the Center for
  Public Policy Priorities for more than a decade; and
         WHEREAS, Recognized often for her tireless efforts, Ms.
  Anderson was the recipient of numerous honors, including the George
  Mahon Award from the Lubbock chapter of the Association for Women in
  Communications, the United Way Rita Harmon Volunteer Service Award,
  the League of Women Voters State President's Award, and the
  National League of Women Voters Education Fund Leaders Award, among
  others; and
         WHEREAS, Ms. Anderson was further known as a dedicated wife
  and mother, a faithful congregant of St. John's Methodist Church in
  Lubbock, and a lifelong learner who earned a master's degree from
  Texas Tech University in 1973; and
         WHEREAS, Though it is impossible to gauge the full effect of a
  person's life, some individuals leave their unmistakable mark on
  the world as they move through it, and Betty Price Anderson's legacy
  of compassion, vision, and commitment to her fellow Texans will be
  cherished for years to come; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Betty Price Anderson
  and extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to her
  husband, Dr. John Anderson; to her sons, Art Anderson and his wife,
  Kate, and Dr. Dale Anderson and his wife, Brenda; to her four
  grandchildren; to her sister, Patsy; and to her other relatives and
  many friends; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Betty Price
  Anderson.
