Pursuant to a notice posted in accordance with Senate Rule 11.18, a public hearing of the Senate Committee on International Relations & Trade was held on Wednesday, August 13, 2008, in the Capitol Extension, Room E1.028, at Austin, Texas.

The chair called the meeting to order at 9:05 a.m.  The following business was transacted: 

 

The committee heard invited testimony on Charge #3:

 

            Develop recommendations to better provide Border and rural communities

            access to state and federal resources.  Review the programs established by

            different states and recommend initiatives that Texas can enact to increase the    competitiveness of these communities, engender critical development, provide

            affordable housing, identify community assets, retain/create wealth and create

            regional jobs. Study and make recommendations to expand business opportunities

            in international markets for businesses located in economically distressed areas,

            including rural and Border areas.

 

 

At 10:35 a.m. Senator Seliger assumed the chair. 

 

At 10:45 a.m. Senator Lucio, Jr. resumed the chair. 

 

At 11:45 a.m. Senator Lucio, Jr. moved that the committee stand recessed until 12:15 p.m; without objection, it was so ordered. 

 

At 12:15 p.m. the committee reconvened. 

 

At 12:15 p.m. Senator Uresti assumed the chair. 

 

At 12:40 p.m. Senator Lucio, Jr. resumed the chair.
