Pursuant to a notice posted in accordance with Senate Rule 11.18, a public hearing of the Senate Committee on International Relations & Trade was held on Wednesday, May 28, 2008, in the Capitol Extension, Room E1.036, at Austin, Texas.

The chair called the meeting to order at 9:06 a.m.  There being a quorum present, the following business was transacted: 

 

A joint hearing of the Senate Committees on International Relations and Trade and Health and Human Services was held to discuss Charge #4:

 

Study the state's current and long-range need for physicians, dentists, nurses, and other allied health and long-term care professionals. Make recommendations to recruit high-need professions, especially for primary care providers and long-term care professionals in the Border region of Texas.

 

Witnesses testifying and registering on the charge are shown on the attached list. 

 

At 11:30 a.m. Senator Nelson assumed the chair. 

 

At 11:35 a.m. Senator Lucio, Jr. resumed the chair. 

 

At 12:50 p.m. Senator Lucio, Jr. moved that the committee stand recessed until 1:30 p.m.; without objection, it was so ordered.  

 

 

At 1:30 p.m. the committee reconvened. 

 

At 2:55 p.m. Senator Nelson assumed the chair. 

 

At 3:05 p.m. Senator Shapleigh assumed the chair. 

 

At 3:10 p.m. Senator Lucio, Jr. resumed the chair. 

 

At 3:12 p.m. Senator Nelson assumed the chair. 

 

At 3:25 p.m. Senator Shapleigh assumed the chair. 

 

At 3:35 p.m. Senator Lucio, Jr. resumed the chair.

 

There being no further business, at 4:15 p.m. Senator Lucio, Jr. moved that the Committee stand recessed subject to the call of the chair.  Without objection, it was so ordered.
