Pursuant to a notice posted in accordance with Senate Rule 11.18, a public hearing of the Standing Senate Subcommittee on Higher Education was held on Monday, February 12, 2007, in the Capitol Extension, Room E1.028, at Austin, Texas.

The chair called the meeting to order at 1:30 p.m.  A quorum was present at 1:55 p.m., and the following business was transacted: 

 

The chair explained in her opening remarks that today's hearing was an organizational meeting to adopt the subcommittee rules, introduce staff members, and hear invited testimony.

 

The chair laid out the proposed subcommittee rules for consideration. Senator Williams moved their adoption. There being no objection, the motion prevailed by unanimous consent.

 

The chair introduced subcommittee staff for the 80th Legislative Session, namely, Warren von Eschenbach, subcommittee director; John Michael Measells, general counsel; Lauren Hendrix, subcommittee clerk; Edwin Ortiz, assistant clerk; and Brent Whitaker, director of budget policy.

 

In addition, she recognized staff from the subcommittee members' offices, namely, Johanna Sheffield, Senator Averitt's office; Amanda Montagne, Senator Williams' office; Lajuana Barton, Senator West's office; Jay Yates, Senator Patrick's office; Andrea Sheridan, Lt. Governor's staff; and Wayne Roberts, Governor's staff.

 

Dr. Raymund Paredes, Commissioner of Higher Education, testified about higher education issues as an invited witness. 

 

 

 

 

 

There being no further business, at 2:11 p.m. Senator Averitt moved that the Committee stand recessed, subject to the call of the chair.  Without objection, it was so ordered.
