SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 623
       WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
citizens of Mustang Ridge and Lockhart in mourning the loss
of Judge Alton Brooks Laws, Jr., who recently passed away at
the age of 81; and
       WHEREAS, Alton Laws was born January 13, 1926, in
Mendoza, Texas; he graduated from Austin High School in 1944
and enlisted in the United States Army, serving in Germany
during his time in the military; and
       WHEREAS, While attending The University of Texas at
Austin, he met his future wife, Joyce, and they were married
on April 9, 1949; he went on to earn a bachelor's degree in
business from the university, and in 1950 he began a career
with the J.C. Penney Company that took him to various cities
around the country; and
       WHEREAS, His work eventually brought him back to Austin,
where he opened the J.C. Penney store at Barton Creek Square Mall,
from which he retired in 1986; through the years, he was active
in many civic and charitable organizations, including the
Boy Scouts of America, Rotary International, the Kiwanis Club,
and the American Cancer Society, and he served on the board of
the Barton Springs Edwards Aquifer Conservation District for
eight years; and
       WHEREAS, In 1985 Judge Laws and his cousin Charles Laws
incorporated the City of Mustang Ridge, where he was elected the
first mayor, municipal judge, and state magistrate; and
       WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and generosity,
he gave unselfishly to others, and his wisdom, kindness, and
compassion will not be forgotten by those who knew him; and
       WHEREAS, Judge Laws was a devoted husband, father, and
grandfather, and his family and friends will continue to live
with the cherished memories of his life and many accomplishments;
now, therefore, be it
       RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
80th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
family of Judge Alton Brooks Laws, Jr.: his wife of 58 years, Joyce;
his daughter and son-in-law, Linda Laws Cooper and Jim Cooper; his
sons and daughters-in-law, Alton Brooks Laws III and his wife,
Pam, and Larry Lee Laws and his wife, Terri; his grandchildren,
Michelle Gist, Tiffany Stubbings, Jimmy Cooper, Kim Pendergraft,
Karen Layhew, Kellie Casino, David Laws, Michael Laws, and
Heather Laws; his great-grandchildren, Cade and Preston Gist,
Gavin Stubbings, Dylan, Trent, and Kayce Layhew, Jaxx Casino,
Mallori Hardgrove Laws, Larry Brooks Laws, and Ryne Laws; and
his sister, Katheryn Laws Norwood; and, be it further
       RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy
from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this
day, it do so in memory of Alton Brooks Laws, Jr.
