| WHEREAS, Dr. Carolyn R. Carman-Merrifield has distinguished | ||
| herself as an outstanding optometrist and valued member of the | ||
| Mansfield community whose professional achievements have earned | ||
| the respect and admiration of all who know her; and | ||
| WHEREAS, The owner of Low Vision Centers of Texas, Dr. | ||
| Carman-Merrifield specializes in treating individuals who suffer | ||
| from low vision as well as those who have experienced traumatic | ||
| brain injury, and she has provided exemplary care to her patients | ||
| for nearly a quarter-century; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Dr. Carman-Merrifield's expertise has earned her | ||
| two separate tenures on the Texas Optometry Board; she was | ||
| initially a member of the board from 1995 to 2001, and she is | ||
| currently serving in that capacity at the behest of Governor Rick | ||
| Perry, who reappointed her in March 2006; in addition, Dr. | ||
| Carman-Merrifield is the former director of the Dallas Services for | ||
| Visually Impaired Children Low Vision Clinic, and she has chaired | ||
| the Neuro-Optometry Project for the American Optometric | ||
| Association; she has served on the board of the Texas Optometric | ||
| Association and is a noted authority in her field, having lectured | ||
| extensively and authored or contributed to a number of scholarly | ||
| works in her area of specialization; and | ||
| WHEREAS, This esteemed practitioner attended Central | ||
| Michigan University and the University of South Florida, | ||
| participating in cheerleading at both schools, and went on to | ||
| become a professional cheerleader with the Tampa Bay Wowdies; she | ||
| studied at the Southern College of Optometry from 1979 to 1983, | ||
| earning the Benny McDaniel Low Vision Award, and she performed her | ||
| residency the following year at the V.A. Medical Center in Kansas | ||
| City, Missouri; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Dr. Carman-Merrifield has been named Physician of | ||
| the Year by the Texas Rehabilitation Association as well as Young | ||
| Optometrist of the Year by the Texas Optometric Association; in all | ||
| her endeavors, she enjoys the love and support of her children, | ||
| Micayla, Andre, and Brenna; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Dr. Carman-Merrifield has demonstrated admirable | ||
| commitment and skill in her chosen profession, and her work will be | ||
| of lasting benefit to the residents of the Lone Star State; now, | ||
| therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas | ||
| Legislature hereby honor Dr. Carolyn Carman-Merrifield for her many | ||
| professional achievements and extend to her best wishes for | ||
| continued success and happiness; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
| prepared for Dr. Carman-Merrifield as an expression of high regard | ||
| by the Texas House of Representatives. | ||
