H.R. No. 2187
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Residents of Dallas lost a beloved neighbor and
committed civic leader with the passing of Samuel William Hudson,
Jr., on May 21, 2005, at the age of 94; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Hudson was a tireless volunteer, dedicating
countless hours to serve on a host of boards and with more than 50
worthy organizations; a steadfast civil rights activist, he became
the first African American to serve on a Dallas grand jury, and his
efforts to desegregate his beloved hometown resulted in African
American students gaining admittance to SMU's School of Theology
and patients gaining admittance to Methodist Hospital; and
WHEREAS, In his notable professional life, Mr. Hudson served
tenures with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development
and the Dallas Housing Authority, and as manager of Roseland Homes
and Edgar Ward housing projects, he helped to improve the quality of
life for innumerable families; and
WHEREAS, This graduate of Bishop College shared a long and
tender union with Ella Lois Johnson, and the couple were blessed
with five children before her passing; fortunate to find love a
second time, he married Geneva Anderson, and together they nurtured
a bond that grew stronger with each passing day; and
WHEREAS, A vibrant citizen who touched many lives through his
advocacy and service, Mr. Hudson will long be remembered as a
devoted family man, a cherished friend, and a leader who
contributed greatly to his community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Samuel William
Hudson, Jr., and extend deepest sympathy to the members of his
family: to his wife, Geneva Anderson Hudson; to his children, Mary
Lois Hudson Sweatt, former State Representative Sam Hudson III,
Estrellita Hudson Redus, Camellia Hudson Franklin, and Clifford
Johnson Hudson; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be
it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Samuel
William Hudson, Jr.
