R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, On March 13, 2003, the El Paso Commission for Women
is posthumously inducting Josefina A. "Pipina" Salas-Porras into
its Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS, Established in 1985, the commission is composed of
El Paso citizens who are committed to the pursuit of equal rights
and responsibilities for all women; inductees to the organization's
Hall of Fame are recognized in one of five categories, including
arts, civic leadership, education, professional, and public
service; and
WHEREAS, Selected for the education category, Mrs.
Salas-Porras was not only a teacher, but also a mentor, an advocate,
and a dedicated civic leader; she touched the lives of several
generations of Texans through her unique teaching style and her
dedication to instilling compassion, acceptance, and cultural
pride in each of her students; and
WHEREAS, A published author and a cofounder of the Bilingual
Institute, this esteemed woman was also a widely respected leader
in the community; she served on the boards of numerous
organizations, including the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, the El
Paso Electric Company, Mountain Bell, and the Freedom Foundation as
well as the El Paso Diabetes Association, Los Pobres Community
Theater, and the city's convention and visitors bureau; and
WHEREAS, The success of the State of Texas, the strength of
our communities, and the overall vitality of American society
depend on the dedication of people like Mrs. Salas-Porras, who use
their considerable talents and resources to serve others, and it is
a privilege to join in paying tribute to her many achievements at
this time; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature hereby honor the late Josefina A. "Pipina" Salas-Porras
on her induction into the El Paso Commission for Women's Hall of
Fame.
