1-1                                   AN ACT
 1-2     relating to the composition of the Commission on Uniform State
 1-3     Laws.
 1-4           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
 1-5           SECTION 1. Sections 762.003(a) and (c), Government Code, are
 1-6     amended to read as follows:
 1-7           (a)  The commission is composed of:
 1-8                 (1)  nine [six] members appointed by the governor;
 1-9     [and]
1-10                 (2)  the executive director of the Texas Legislative
1-11     Council or a person designated by the executive director; and
1-12                 (3)  in addition to the persons described by
1-13     Subdivisions (1) and (2), residents of this state who have[,
1-14     because of] long service in the cause of uniformity in state
1-15     legislation as shown by:
1-16                       (A)  at least 20 years of service representing
1-17     the state as an associate member of the national conference;
1-18                       (B)  election as a life member[, have been
1-19     elected life members] of the national conference; or
1-20                       (C)  [who have] at least 15 years of service as a
1-21     member of the commission and at least five years of combined
1-22     service as a judge or justice of a trial or appellate court of this
1-23     state.
1-24           (c)  Appointed members serve staggered six-year terms, with
 2-1     the terms of three [two] members expiring September 30 of each
 2-2     even-numbered year.
 2-3           SECTION 2. Promptly after this Act takes effect, the governor
 2-4     shall appoint three additional members to the Commission on Uniform
 2-5     State Laws to comply with Section 762.003, Government Code, as
 2-6     amended by this Act.  In appointing those members, the governor
 2-7     shall appoint one person to a term expiring September 30, 2002, one
 2-8     to a term expiring September 30, 2004, and one to a term expiring
 2-9     September 30, 2006.
2-10           SECTION 3. This Act takes effect July 1, 2001.
