         Pursuant to a notice posted in accordance with Senate Rule  
         11.18, a public hearing of the Senate Committee on Criminal  
         Justice was held on Thursday, August 17, 2000, in the University  
         of North Texas at Dallas, Room 242

         The chair called the meeting to order at 1:15p.m.  There being a  
         quorum present, the following business was transacted:   
         The Chairman recognized Senator West to introduce Dr. Virginia  
         Wheless, Interim Director of North Texas System Center, and  
         thank her and her staff for their assistance. 
         The Chairman recognized Senator Mike Moncrief.  Senator Moncrief  
         made brief remarks regarding his recent meeting with a group of  
         area parole officers and TDCJ administrators. 
         The Chairman then asked for public and invited testimony on  
         pardons and paroles.  The witnesses testifying on these subjects  
         are shown on the attached list. 
         There being no further business, at 6:40 p.m. Senator Armbrister  
         moved that the Committee stand recessed subject to the call of  
         the chair.  Without objection, it was so ordered.
