         Pursuant to a notice posted on August 4, 1998, the House  
         Committee on Appropriations met in a public hearing and was  
         called to order by the Acting Chair, Representative  at 9:40  
         am. 
          
         The roll was answered as follows:

                   Pitts (5). 
          
         Absent:   Representatives Junell; Cuellar; Davis; Eiland;

                   Mowery; Price; Raymond; Swinford; Tillery; Turner,  
                   Sylvester; Walker; West, George "Buddy" (22). 
          
         A quorum was not present. 
          
         Commissioner Don Gilbert of the Health & Human Services  
         Commission updated the committee of recent developments with  
         the Commission proposall for a Children's Health Insurance  
         Program (CHIP). 
          
         Commissioner William Archer of the Department of Health  
         offered testimony on recent developments regarding CHIP. 
          
         Paul Priest, Kelly Furgeson, and Trey Berendt of the  
         Legislative Budget Board offered testimony on cost projections  
         for CHIP. 
          
         Stephen Schwartz of the Texas Dental Association offered  
         testimony on a proposal for a dental benefits package. 
          
         At 12:40 pm Rep. Delisi, upon a motion by Rep. Heflin,  
         adjourned the committee until further notice.
