R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, Pace Foods is marking a significant milestone this

 1-2     year as officers and staff celebrate the 50th anniversary of the

 1-3     company's founding; and

 1-4           WHEREAS, The business' history dates back to the 1940s, when

 1-5     David Pace moved to San Antonio to carry on the family trade,

 1-6     cooking, bottling, and selling a variety of syrups, jellies,

 1-7     peppers, and pickles; and

 1-8           WHEREAS, After World War II, a lower demand for sugar led

 1-9     Mr. Pace to develop the spicy sauce he named "picante"; his unique

1-10     recipe has proved to be an outstanding success, for Mexican-style

1-11     salsa overtook ketchup as the country's favorite condiment in 1991,

1-12     and Americans currently enjoy 100 million pounds of Pace's sauces,

1-13     the nation's top brand, each year; and

1-14           WHEREAS, Along with the original, or medium, picante sauce,

1-15     Pace now distributes hot, mild, and extra-mild varieties in all 50

1-16     states and Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United

1-17     Kingdom; the company has added Thick & Chunky Salsa to its

1-18     repertoire, and it has joined a venture with Kraft Foods, Inc., and

1-19     Campbell's Soup Company to make Pace Velveeta Con Queso for the

1-20     enjoyment of its many loyal customers; and

1-21           WHEREAS, Pace Foods has earned widespread acclaim from food

1-22     critics as well, winning five World Selection Committee Awards for

1-23     excellence in canned foods; its tasty condiment was the featured

1-24     picante sauce at President George Bush's inauguration, and members

 2-1     of a mountain climbing team carried the product to the top of Mount

 2-2     Everest in 1985; and

 2-3           WHEREAS, Mr. Pace retired from the company in 1982 and left

 2-4     the business in the capable hands of his son-in-law, Kit Goldsbury,

 2-5     before he passed away in 1993; today, a management team of R. J.

 2-6     Sands, Dr. Lou Rasplicka, Larry Swim, and Murray Kessler continues

 2-7     the proud tradition of quality and customer service that the Pace

 2-8     family established half a century ago; and

 2-9           WHEREAS, Throughout its proud history, Pace Foods has

2-10     established itself as one of the premier companies in the Lone Star

2-11     State, and it is indeed a pleasure to honor all those associated

2-12     with the venture at this time; now, therefore, be it

2-13           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

2-14     Legislature hereby honor Pace Foods on the occasion of its 50th

2-15     anniversary and extend to its current management team, President

2-16     and Chief Operating Officer R. J. Sands and Vice Presidents Dr.

2-17     Lou Rasplicka, Larry Swim, and Murray Kessler, warmest best wishes

2-18     for continued success and happiness; and, be it further

2-19           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

2-20     prepared for the management team as an expression of high regard by

2-21     the Texas House of Representatives.
