                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to honor
    1-2  former Governor Dolph Briscoe for the many significant
    1-3  contributions he has made to the agricultural and livestock
    1-4  industries in our state and congratulate him on his most recent
    1-5  honor as the recipient of the Texas A&M Distinguished Texan in
    1-6  Agriculture Award; and
    1-7        WHEREAS, This prestigious accolade, which is sponsored by the
    1-8  Agriculture Department at Texas A&M University, recognizes an
    1-9  individual's outstanding leadership, contributions, and
   1-10  achievements in behalf of the state's agribusiness industry; and
   1-11        WHEREAS, Governor Briscoe has admirably preserved a strong
   1-12  family heritage by distinguishing himself as a statesman, civic
   1-13  leader, businessman, and rancher for more than half a century, and
   1-14  his noteworthy achievements have left an indelible mark on both the
   1-15  agricultural industry and the people of Texas; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, He began his esteemed career in public service when
   1-17  he won election to the Texas House of Representatives in 1948, and
   1-18  he went on to represent his district with integrity and distinction
   1-19  for another three terms; widely regarded throughout the state for
   1-20  his professionalism, honesty, and impeccable character, he went on
   1-21  to serve as governor for two terms, from 1973 to 1979; and
   1-22        WHEREAS, Governor Briscoe has continued to make many
   1-23  significant contributions to the livestock industry as a private
   1-24  citizen through his leadership roles in state, regional, and
    2-1  national organizations, including the Texas and Southwestern Cattle
    2-2  Raisers Association and the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers
    2-3  Association; and
    2-4        WHEREAS, In addition, this distinguished gentleman helped
    2-5  initiate significant improvements to the farm-to-market road system
    2-6  throughout rural Texas and led efforts to successfully eradicate
    2-7  the screwworm, a feat that many consider to be the most significant
    2-8  achievement in the history of Southern livestock production; and
    2-9        WHEREAS, Deeply committed to educational issues as well, he
   2-10  has generously given of his time, talents, and energies to help
   2-11  prepare the future leaders of our state as chairman of the Texas
   2-12  Agricultural Lifetime Leadership Advisory Board; and
   2-13        WHEREAS, Throughout his lifetime, Governor Briscoe has worked
   2-14  tirelessly to improve the agricultural and livestock industries in
   2-15  our state, and he is most deserving of special praise and
   2-16  recognition on the occasion of his most recent honor; now,
   2-17  therefore, be it
   2-18        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
   2-19  Legislature hereby commend Dolph Briscoe for the many significant
   2-20  contributions he has made to the agribusiness industry in Texas and
   2-21  congratulate him on his receipt of the Texas A&M Distinguished
   2-22  Texan in Agriculture Award; and, be it further
   2-23        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   2-24  prepared for Governor Briscoe as an expression of high regard by
   2-25  the Texas House of Representatives.
